Gegenwärtig kann keine Region in der islamischen Welt von sich behaupten, auf irgend einem Gebiet führend zu sein. Tatsächlich diktieren heute die Nichtmuslime aus dem Osten und dem Westen die soziale, ökonomische und politische Tagesordnung der islamischen Umma. Die Muslime identifizieren sich oft in erster Linie als Türken, Araber, Afrikaner oder Pakistaner. Als ob dieses nicht genug sei, unterteilen sie sich auch noch innerhalb der von den Kolonialisten aufgezwungenen Grenzen. So klassifizieren sich beispielsweise die Bewohner Pakistans als Pandschabis, Sindhis, Balauchis und Pathan.
