Das Verbot der Vollverschleierung in der Öffentlichkeit stelle keine Verletzung der Grundrechte dar, urteilte der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte in Straßburg. Es sei legitim, wenn der Staat mit solchen Maßnahmen die Voraussetzungen für ein Zusammenleben in der Gesellschaft wahren wolle.

    Das Burka-Verbot gilt seit dreieinhalb Jahren in Frankreich. Wer sich dennoch voll verschleiert in der Öffentlichkeit zeigt - egal, ob mit Burka, Nikab oder anders verhüllt - muss mit 150 Euro Bußgeld und Pflichtkursen in Staatsbürgerkunde rechnen. Wenn Männer Frauen zur Burka zwingen, drohen ihnen Gefängnis und bis zu 30.000 Euro Geldstrafe. In den vergangenen drei Jahren wurde 750-mal ein Bußgeld verhängt.

    Geklagt hatte eine französische Muslimin. Sie sah ihre in der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention verankerten Grundrechte verletzt - unter anderem die Religionsfreiheit, die Meinungsfreiheit sowie die Achtung des Privat- und Familienlebens. Durch einen Schleier werde niemand gestört oder angegriffen, hatte sie argumentiert."
