Koca Yûsuf İsmâ'îl war bei seiner Ankunft in New York am 26. März 1898 ungeschlagen, bis er in einem Spiel gegen den "griechisch-römische Welt-Schwergewichts-Champion" Ernest Roeber im Madison Square Garden disqualifizier wurde. Yûsuf, verursachte ein Aufruhr des Publikum, als er Roeber aus dem Ring warf, -einer erhöhten Plattform- und ließ ihn mit dem Kopf voran auf den Boden fünf Meter unter fallen. Roeber war für einige Minuten bewusstlos, und viele in der Menge glaubten er sei tot, so dass die Zuschauer in den Ring stürmten, und riefen dabei "Kill the Turk!/ Töteten den Türken!". Nur eine kleine Polizeiwache unter Polizeichef John H. McCullough konnten die Zuschauer am Eindringen in den Ring blockieren.

Roeber wurde nach ein paar Minuten wiederbelebt und von Ärzten die Verletzungen untersucht. Er war auf seiner Schulter gelandet und nicht, auf seinem Kopf. Die Ärzte sagten, dass er eine Rückenverletzung erlitten hat und es wurde beschlossen, dass er nicht in der Lage sei weiter zu kämpfen.

Der Schiedsrichter Hugh Leonard beendete das Spiel, bei Aufrufen wie "Kill the Turk!" und Drohungen von den Anwesenden das sie ihn lynchen würden, musste Koca Yûsuf von der Polizei in seine Garderobe eingesperrt werden.

Yûsuf's Manager Jōsēf Doublier bot an, einen Schaukampf zwischen Yûsuf und Tom Cannon zu inszenieren, aber der Polizeichef McCullagh weigerte sich, die Veranstaltung -aufgrund von Bedenken- der Ausschreitungen weiter zu führen.

Monate später, kämpfte Koca Yûsuf gegen Evan Lewis den "Würger" bei der amerikanischen "Schwergewichts-Champion" in Chicago, İllinois. Evan Lewis war weder in der Lage, Yûsuf's massive Größe und Stärke zu überwinden, noch gelang es ihm, seinen "Sleeper Hold" während des Spiels einzusetzen. Koca Yûsuf gewann $5.000 und hatte das Preisgeld in Gold umgewandelt und trug es in seinem Meisterschaftsgürtel.

Kurz nach seinem Sieg über Lewis nahm Koca Yûsuf das erste Schiff nach Europa zurück, wo er geplant hat, einen Café oder Basar in seinem Heimatdorf in der Nähe von Şumnu (Schumen) zu eröffnen.

Es war auf dem unglückseligen "La Bourgogne", mit 600 Passagieren, als das Schiff am Morgen des 4. Juli 1898 sank, ertrank Koca Yûsuf, wie es die New Yorker Presse berichtet, fiel Koca Yûsuf über Bord, während Passagiere in die Rettungsboote stiegen.

Über seinen Tot gibt es zwei Berichte:

1.) das Gewicht seines Geldgürtels, -angeblich, die zwischen $8.000 und $10.000- (ungefähr 40 kg) in Goldmünzen, das ihn nach unten gezogen hat und er ertrank, bevor die Crew zu ihn gelangen konnte, und

2.) das er in ein Rettungsboot steigen wollte, aber die panischen Passagiere sich vor seiner enormen Größe gefürchtet haben und ihn daran hinderten einzusteigen, indem sie ihm seine Finger, oder Hände mit einer Axt abschlugen.
