Imam Malik wurde im Jahr 93 n. d. Hidschra (712 n. Chr.) in Medina geboren. Er ist der zweite der Imame der vier Rechtsschulen und der erste, der eine nach Themen geordnete Hadithsammlung verfasste, der er, nachdem er sie 70 der Gelehrten von Medina vorgelegt und sie alle ihren Inhalt übereinstimmend als richtig bestätigt hatten, den Namen Al-Muwatta, "das vielfach Bestätigte" gab. Imam Schafi'i pries Al-Muwatta als "das zuverlässigste Buch nach dem Qur'an". Imam Malik war bekannt für seine Aufrichtigkeit, Frömmigkeit und Gradlinigkeit sowie für sein umfassendes Wissen bezüglich des Gesetzes Allahs, der Rechtswissenschaften und seine Autorität auf dem Gebiet der Hadise. Seine Großzügigkeit war ebenso legendär wie seine immense Liebe zum Gesandten Allahs, Friede und Segen seien auf ihm. Seine Gewissenhaftigkeit und Bescheidenheit wird in folgender Begebenheit deutlich: Einer seiner Schüler berichtet: "Ich härte einmal, wie ihm 48 Fragen gestellt wurden, auf 32 davon antwortete er mit den Worten: "Ich weiß es nicht." Seine Unbeugsamkeit und Furchtlosigkeit vor den Herrschern dieser Welt zeigt ein anderer Bericht: Der Sultan Al-Mansur untersagte ihm, ein Hadis mit dem Wortlaut: "Die unter Zwang ausgesprochene Scheidung ist rechtsunwirksam zu überliefern. Als dann ein Spion zu ihm kam und nach eben dieser Angelegenheit fragte, antwortete er mit genau diesem Hadis, woraufhin ihn der Sultan verhaften und schlagen ließ, bis seine Schulter ausgekugelt war und er das Bewusstsein verlor. Als er wieder zu sich kam, sagte er: "Ich vergebe ihm (Al-Mansur), dass er mich hat schlagen lassen! Als man ihn später fragte warum, antwortete er: "Ich fürchtete, dem Propheten Muchammad. Allah segne ihn und schenke ihm Frieden, zu begegnen, nachdem ich zur Ursache für die Verdammnis eines seiner Angehörigen geworden war. Nach seiner Bestrafung durch Schläge wurde ihm der Bart abrasiert und er wurde auf ein Kamel gesetzt und durch die Stadt geführt und ihm wurde befohlen sich laut vor allen Leuten schuldig zu bekennen, worauf er rief: "Wer mich kennt, der kennt mich, wer mich nicht kennt: mein Name ist Malik ibn Anas und ich sage: "Die unter Zwang ausgesprochene Scheidung ist null und nichtig! Imam Malik hinterließ eine Vielzahl von wichtigen Schriften sowie eine ganze Reihe hervorragender Gelehrter. Allein für sein Al-Muwatta hatte er 69 Überlieferern die Lehrerlaubnis (ijaza) erteilt, als er im Jahre 179 n.d.. Hidschra in Medina starb. Möge Allah mit ihm zufrieden sein! Sein Grab befindet sich auf dem Friedhof Dschannach Al-Baqi nahe der Moschee des Propheten, Allah segne ihn und schenke ihm Frieden. Viele Gelehrte der Tâbi'în sagten über Imâm Mâlik, dass der folgende Hadîth des Propheten Muhammad ﷺ auf ihn zutrifft: "يُوشِكُ أنْ يَضْرِبَ النَّاسُ أكبادَ الإِبِلِ فلا يَجِدُونَ أَعْلَمَ مِنْ عالمِ المدينة". Die Bedeutung lautet: "Die Menschen werden sich auf den Weg machen, um sich Wissen anzueignen und werden keinen finden, der wissender ist als der Gelehrte von al-Madînah". Imâm Mâlik wurde von vielen Gelehrten gelobt: Imâm asch-Schâfi'iyy sagte: „Wenn die Gelehrten erwähnt werden, so ist Mâlik der Stern." Ibn Mu'în sagte: „Imâm Mâlik war ein großer Gelehrter mit starker Beweisführung." Yahyâ Ibn Sa^îd al-Qattân sagte: „Mâlik ist der Führende in der Hadîth-Lehre." Ibn Sa'îd sagte: „Mâlik war vertrauenswürdig, fromm, ein Rechtsgelehrter mit starken Argumenten." Al-Bukhâriyy sagte: „Die stärkste Überlieferungskette ist: Mâlik über Nâfi über Ibn Umar."
