    Suicide bomber kills 30 in eastern Iraq

    30 people have been killed and 50 wounded as a suicide bomber blew himself up amid a group of supporters of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, security and medical officials said.

    The victims had gathered in the mostly-Kurdish town of Khanaqin on Monday to celebrate the release of a video purportedly showing the ailing Talabani, a Kurdish leader, voting in Germany, where he is receiving treatment for a stroke, ahead of a parliamentary election on Wednesday.

    Khanaqin lies within a swathe of disputed territory that Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region wants to incorporate over the objections of Baghdad.

    Militants frequently capitalize on poor communication between Kurdish and Arab security forces in the disputed areas to carry out attacks.

    Khanaqin and nearby Saadiyah have previously been targeted by attacks.

    Iraq is embroiled in its worst protracted period of bloodshed in years, with nearly 3,000 people killed already this year.

    The vote is Iraq's first parliamentary elections since US forces withdrew in 2011 and is a major test for the security forces. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is hoping to win a third term.

    Meanwhile, Takfiri groups, including the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), are reportedly coming to Iraq from neighboring Syria and Saudi Arabia to undermine security in the country.

    The government in Baghdad has blamed Riyadh for the Iraq chaos, saying Saudi Arabia is funding and arming militants fighting against Iraqi forces in the country's western areas, including Anbar Province.

    Russia MPs set to close NATO office in Moscow: Daily

    Following NATO recent decision to suspend it all-out military cooperation with Moscow over Ukraine tension, Russian lawmakers set to review closure of NATO office in Moscow, a Russian daily reported.

    Russian lawmakers question whether it is reasonable for the NATO information office to continue to operate in Moscow taking into account that on April 1st, the NATO members' foreign ministers decided to suspend all practical civilian and military cooperation with Moscow, Kommersant newspaper reports.

    A source in the Russian ministry of defense also confirmed the information. However, sources close to the administration of the Russian president pointed out that the decision has not been made yet.

    "That's a sound counter measure since it's impossible to find common ground with NATO under current conditions," said the source.

    Russian lawmakers also consider closing NATO information office in the Russian capital due to the restricted access of Russia's Permanent Mission to NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

    NATO sources told Kommersant that they have not received any notification that their information office might be closed.
    However, previously, NATO received notification only 24 hours prior to closing in 1999 during the alliance bombing of Yugoslavia.

    Syria militants receive training in Qatar: Reports

    Qatar is training foreign-backed militants operating against the Syrian government as part of Doha's efforts to topple President Bashar al-Assad, reports say.

    According to French media reports, militants from the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA), the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups receive training in the tiny Arab monarchy before being sent to Syria.

    The reports further noted that the militants are equipped with anti-tank missiles and global position system (GPS) devices supplied by the United States.

    The militants spend one week in Turkey for a medical check-up and then head for Qatar where they undergo three weeks of training.

    According to a militant source, around 100 militants are dispatched to Qatar every month to be trained before going to Syria.

    At the end of the training, the militants receive a bulletproof vest, a helmet and a full medical kit, the report added, noting that they get their weapons from American forces on the Turkish border.

    Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Damascus says the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- have been fuelling the unrest by providing militants with money and weapons.

    The Turkish daily Aydinlik has said in a recent report the former commander of FSA, Salim Idris, acted as a middleman in the transfer of US-made TOW anti-tank missiles from Turkey to the militants in Syria.

    About a dozen militants have been trained in Turkey on how to use the weapons, the report said.

    Earlier this month, Israeli daily Haaretz said that Tel Aviv is seeking to launch a joint operation with Saudi Arabia to train the foreign-backed militants operating in Syria.
